Sensibilia, 2013 (soon english version)

Curated by Max Hernández Calvo

What Adriana Ciudad explores in “Sensibilia” is the experience of the sensitive world when it opens beyond the perceptual limits. Her paintings depict surroundings and everyday scenes which are both mental landscapes and oneiric worlds, where different levels of experience seem to be displayed: what we perceive, think, feel, etc.

From her -exclusively female- characters emerge geometrical structures, lines, stains, designs, organic and accidental forms, loose strokes, etc., that spread and blend in with the same characters (women, tigers) and the same entourages in which they can be found (rooms, open spaces). This constellation of elements alludes to intuition, thoughts, sensations and emotions which arise from the confrontation with a world that we attempt to interpret. In other words, for the artist, the world is how we approach it.

A way in which Ciudad approaches the world is adopting some of its visual codes. Her artificial color palette, decisively actual, and the designs and graphic patterns (especially the textile ones) that she recreates are taken from the current urban environment. But in adopting the aforesaid palette and shapes, the artist is also trying to update the possibilities of her entourage.

Each painting unfolds an array of modes of representation, types of image, artistic-historical models, technical developments, etc., which gives it a new sense. In these art pieces, the artist simultaneously alludes to drawing, painting, photography and architecture, as well as recurring to figuration (Realist and Surrealist), abstraction (hard-edge, lyrical, color field, informalist, etc.) and decoration (in graphic patterns, animal prints, ornamental figures, etc). She equally explores the precision of linear perspective (geometry, architecture) concurrently to the randomness of dripping or surface dyeing.

These diverse models which the artist brings together in her artistic work, rather than overlapping, they merge transiting from one category to another one, sketching a “road map” that point new aesthetic possibilities. Although a contemporary stylistic sense is implied, we could say that the artist works on a new line of painting. The most important sense of “actualidad” in Adriana Ciudad’s work concerns the experience of time. In “Sensibilia” the past does not seem to exist as such: we find ourselves in an eternal present filled with potential. Here are her repeated strokes, her characters drawn in duplicate—and barely desplaced—that emerge mildly as phantoms of themselves, incarnating a latent possibility inherent to existent itself. But these phantoms come from the future. And they come to remind us, with their intensity (chromatic, luminic, graphic), that all other existing possibilities—infinite possibilities of being in the world—are always present and can be undertaken by us, today.
